K-Gr 2—Fudge and Einstein's names define their characters: one is soft and wimpy while the other is inquisitive. Their owner, Andrea, takes her pets on vacation out west to Arizona and readers see their true personalities. Einstein is eager to explore new territory, but Fudge is tentative. Yet it is Einstein's enthusiasm that gets him into trouble and Fudge must find the courage to rescue his friend. Together they discover many parts of Arizona—some sweet and some scary. In the end, they decide that they prefer the familiarity of home. This book is filled with bright and colorful oversized illustrations in a graphic novel format appropriate for younger readers. Unlike so many picture books that rhyme, this has a whimsical, conversational rhythm—ideal for reading aloud. It also has puns that young readers will find amusing.
VERDICT Any pet lover who has "naughty" animals will enjoy this fun book as will readers who like adventure. Parents packing up for summer travels will definitely want to bring this light tale along.
