Gr 1-3–When a cow goes missing, the rest of the farm animals enlist Inspector Billiam Van Hoof via a supersonic goat whistle. After leaving the house, turning back because he left his scones cooking in the oven, and leaving again, he takes the case. Though Van Hoof may be a detective, his lack of focus sends him and his theories about Cow all over the place. Crop circles and a reunion with a high school sweetheart distract the detective, but he means well. Visual gags, including recurring updates to Van Hoof’s notebook, ensure there is never a dull moment. Large panels and a cast of clearly identifiable animals make this an easy recommendation for young readers.
VERDICT This goat detective’s random directions are worth following, even if this is readers’ first time seeing him in action.
