Gr 4–6—These high-interest topics are given thorough treatment. Each book describes the science around the type of disaster in question and the technology and legislation used to correct and prevent it from recurring. Each opening chapter presents an example, beginning pre-disaster and concluding with the aftermath. Chapters two through four dig into the scientific causes and effects. STEM careers are featured in abundance along with improvements in technology and legislation. The final chapter looks at prevention. Sidebars with relevant information and those encouraging critical thinking are included, along with "How Science Works" insets that enrich the presentation. A closing "Case Study" provides another disaster example. Technical terms described in the text are not listed in the limited glossary. The rare charts and diagrams often lack adequate descriptions and keys. Photos, while abundant, are occasionally off-target.
VERDICT These will be good additions where STEM topics need reinforcement and for collections that don't already own "Disaster Science" (Cherry Lake), which covers the same material.
