PreS-Gr 2–It’s Christmastime, and Evie is busy preparing, wishing, and worrying. At school, they’re rehearsing for the Nativity play: “‘I wish I had a singing part,’ says Evie in a whisper.” At home, they’re making pudding and decorating the Christmas cake: “‘I hope it tastes as good as it looks,’ says Evie.” As it gets closer to her Uncle Seán’s visit, Evie is hoping for a white Christmas, a baby sister, and an angel. Evie’s wishes come true in unexpected ways, and Christmas Eve ultimately delivers “the best Christmas surprise ever.” The story, while sweet, is very simple. It is the illustrations that stand out: they are lovely, colorful, and full of texture, with plenty of detail to soak in.
VERDICT While not an outstanding Christmas book, this is a beautiful addition to most collections.
