Gr 3–5—These books on the Earth's continents state their aim clearly on their covers: "Core Library." They neglect, however, to specify which Common Core State Standards they meet. Nevertheless, each title does a suitable, if broad job of examining its titular landmass, geology and geography, and animals and plants. Each starts with a page of "Quick Facts," then moves on to chapters covering specific topics. Sidebars throughout add content by highlighting interesting facts and figures. Each title also contains original source material (a speech, for instance) that is meant to encourage children to think about the writer's intentions. The books also pose assignment-like questions for further discussion; one even suggests that readers write a blog post. The color photos and maps are appropriate and add some visual appeal but aren't out of the ordinary. The books conclude with a glossary and an index, a list of places to see, additional assignment ideas under the heading of "Stop and Think," and a list of sites and books for more information. These books would be fine purchases for schools that investigate the continents rather than individual countries. They are far too broad, though, for any deeper work.—
Marie Drucker, Malverne Public Library, NYWith a smaller scope than other books in the series, this is an adequate but superficial overview of Antarctica, illustrated with photographs that are sharp but not always well placed. There is nothing you won't find in a basic encyclopedia article. Common Core sidebars are more interesting but frequently at a higher skill level than the book itself. Reading list. Glos., ind.
