Gr 1–3—A narrative-driven investigation of the journey electricity makes from power plants to household electronics. The book opens on a little girl who talks about how she, her family, and other people in the city use electricity in their daily lives. When a blackout happens, she and her family travel to discover where electricity comes from and how it gets to their house. The artwork uses a warm palette for most of the story, with a flash of cooler, darker colors and silhouettes to express the emotional response the characters have to the blackout. The simple brushstrokes and clean lines are expressive and adeptly capture the tone of the text. Readers will find the family relatable and progressive. The narrative does an acceptable job of exploring electricity and its impact on all types of users. The text relies on words that most kids hear in daily life, providing easy-to-follow context for young learners.
VERDICT Elementary school librarians will take to this examination of electricity. It will circulate well with children who enjoy Suzanne Slade's "What if There Were No…" titles.
