PreS-Gr 2–When her uncle JB asks Cora for a favor—to take care of his pet bread—Cora finds it a little odd, but how hard can it be to look after some bread? But this is no ordinary bread. This is sourdough, and Cora learns that part of what makes this bread unique are the bacteria and fungi growing inside of it. Uncle JB shows Cora how to feed the bread, and soon Cora is measuring flour and water and making sure the bread has the correct amount of each. What Cora doesn’t expect is how fast it grows! Soon the house is full of containers and jars of bread, and Cora and her moms begin to bake some to make room for more. The bread is delicious, and Cora decides to share the bread at the community center, where she teaches others how to make their own sourdough bread. This humorous story provides a look at the characteristics of sourdough and is complemented by recipes for kids.
