Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive

Gr 9 Up—This well-made production is appropriate for high school students. Combining actor Denis O'Hare's sensitive portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe with expert commentary and recitations of his work, the program gives viewers a surprisingly rich perspective on the famous poet and novelist, who is often erroneously remembered for being mad and an author of solely works of horror. Viewers will learn that he had a difficult upbringing because of the early death of his mother and his subsequent rearing by the Poe family, who never let him forget he was existing on charity. Horror was, in fact, only a small part of his literary output; he loved and wrote many romantic comedies. He was also the creator of the detective story genre. All of this is conveyed through wonderful readings and O'Hare's compelling depiction. Extras include Garrison Keillor's marvelously spellbinding recitation of "Annabel Lee." There is a mash-up recitation of "The Raven" by most of the people involved in the production, including actor Chris Sarandon and Poe's great-grandson.
