PreS-K–This board book blends homespun music and science. The text is intended to be sung, with lyrics that apply a bohemian sensibility to astronomy. For instance, the stars shine “from the heavens” and we hold the moon “in peace.” Some heavenly bodies are personified; others are not. The earth is female, using the pronoun she. The moon is not gendered, a celestial “it.” The stars and the sun are not assigned pronouns. Digitally enhanced crayon illustrations feature bold, vibrant colors and busy compositions. Back matter explains the scientific concepts in more depth. Musical notation is also included for those interested in playing or singing the song. A QR code and URL provide access to a free animated video, which also includes the song sung by the author, helpful for anyone brave enough to attempt their own rendition. The animation is simple but charming; the song, folksy.
VERDICT Aim this at toddlers, underserved in science topics, otherwise there are other books on the planet’s rotation and revolution.
