K-Gr 2–Two animal friends, who are not quite the same, collaborate in their own way to achieve the goal of enjoying the sweet taste of honey. The honeyguide bird flies around during the day in search of trees with honey. The honey badger, a predominantly nocturnal creature who defends itself from predators, depends on the honeyguide to take him toward the precious sweet treat. Through her characteristic poetry, Lázaro briefly introduces the mutualistic relationship between these two animals that live in the African savannas. The rhyming text and illustration color palette guide readers through the day and night life of this unnamed “diverse and old continent” and could encourage them to find out more about this habitat and ecosystem. A note from the author is included, but this title could have been enhanced by a bibliography and other back matter usually found in informational texts.
VERDICT This book is a reprint of a 2013 edition, with a new illustrator, and it is a suggested purchase for elementary science or language arts classrooms.
