PreS-Gr 1–Doña Poncha begins her day by shopping for groceries. She buys salt for the salt shaker, tea for the teakettle, hamburger meat for the buns, coffee for the coffee pot, and juice for the pitcher. After she purchases what she needs, she begins the long journey home, requiring her to surf, ride a scooter, and take a plane in order to get back to her house. Just as she’s about to arrive, she encounters an admirer, and becomes so overcome with emotion that it causes her to fall and drop all of her groceries! She is only able to salvage a few of the things she bought, and struggles to explain to the teakettle why she has coffee and not tea, and why there’s sugar for the salt shaker instead of salt. She makes the journey back to the supermarket, where she again encounters her admirer, and this time, instead of going back to the store, he returns home with her for tea. The story might be confusing for some readers, but it offers good opportunities for vocabulary-building and bright, playful illustrations that correlate well with the text.
VERDICT Some of the transitions in this book may confuse readers, but could be a good choice for one-on-one reading.
