Gr 1-4–Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, welcomes readers to a tour of Halloween Town in this picture book extension of the film Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. First up is the Town Square, where fans will recognize the Mayor and some other familiar faces. Next is the Town Hall, where Jack introduces neighboring Christmas Town to his friends, while seeking ideas on how to improve the jolly holiday. A visit to Sally’s kitchen is next, where she whips up all of her clever potions. Lock, Shock, and Barrel’s treehouse is full of traps and mischief, but luckily readers are spared a trip down to Oogie Boogie’s lair. The tour ends in the graveyard where Jack walks with his ghost dog Zero and joins his best friend Sally on Spiral Hill. The illustrations by McCabe very much resemble art from the movie, which will appeal to fans. With interactive elements like pull tabs and flaps, there are over 25 surprises hidden inside of each and every page, and readers will enjoy peeking behind gravestones and jack-o’-lanterns to find them all. For readers new to the story, this book is a wonderful introduction to Halloween Town. For fans of the movie, it is a delightful way to revisit old friends and familiar haunts. The fun, frightening text and interactive features will ensure that all readers are in for some ghostly surprises!
VERDICT An interactive, year-round read for both old and new fans of the movie.
