PreS-Gr 2–From the author of
School Selfies, a look into a child’s experience of caring for a loved one facing a form of memory loss. A young girl remembers how her nana once danced as a ballerina, celebrated Hanukkah, and baked with her. Now that the “Memory Thief” has stolen her grandmother’s smile, she struggles to find a way to connect with her. When she gets the idea to play a favorite song for her, her grandmother smiles and dances again. Garland’s illustrations proffer convincing facial expressions while the use of vivid colors shows both the happiness and connection of the characters as well as the confusion caused by memory loss. A letter from the author tells children how they might help a family member experiencing memory loss. Terms related to Judaism are also introduced and defined.
VERDICT A helpful choice for children who can relate to the experience of watching the struggle of memory loss by a loved one.
