Gr 2—4—In this early chapter book, fourth-grader Daisy Martinez's school is holding student council elections, and snotty Madison decides to run for president. After much worry about the bossy girl's leadership, Daisy's friends convince her to add her name to the ballot. Readers follow Daisy and her supporters as they plan a campaign and deal with bullying from jealous Madison. The characters are one-dimensional, and the overwhelming predictability of the story hinders it from being engaging. The black-and-white cartoon-style illustrations scattered throughout add visual interest, but they are average at best.—Nicole Waskie-Laura, Chenango Forks Elementary, Binghamton, NY
Arizona fourth-grader Daisy loves her family, her friends, and her teacher. In her first four books, she writes an essay, runs for class president, enjoys a museum field trip with her abuela, and organizes her class's contribution to the school festival. The story lines are bland and unsurprising, but some readers may be drawn to amiable, energetic, super-cheerful Daisy. Review covers these Calico Chapter Books: Growing Up Daisy titles: Daisy's Fall Festival, Daisy's Field Trip Adventure, Daisy for President, and Daisy's Summer Essay.
