PreS-K–This bilingual board book is a melodic and colorful story that introduces young children to the colors around them and to familial love. Each color has a corresponding illustrated animal parent and child: Chicken and chick for yellow, Rabbit and kit for green, Otter and pup for blue, and Deer and fawn for red. It is told from the perspective of a parent to a child. Each color is compared to something related to the animal’s environment. It presents why things are better when the pair are together. The final line repeats the colors and how the parent and child shine brighter when they are together. Gama’s vivid images show a balance of the main colors and contrasting colors for depth and recognizable depictions of each animal pair in their natural hues. This book is adapted from an original song by the bilingual music duo Andrés and Christina; the format reflects the song’s structure. The first three colors have two spreads with a verse and version of the chorus, red has one spread bridge, and the final page is the outro. The font color might not be accessible for some readers, especially set against scenes also done in color.
VERDICT Readers will be singing along to this beautifully illustrated, bilingual board book about colors and familial love. A great addition to every library’s concept books collection and story times.
