PreS-Gr 1–In this second outing for Clovis, a tender-hearted but hot-tempered bull in a china shop, he notices items missing from the shelves and begins to suspect customers and friends. Clovis allows his suspicions to get the best of him, eyeing and accusing others until his shop has no more customers. When he finally catches the culprit, Clovis’s memory of sweet Granny Grace reminds him that judging someone without the facts hurts everyone, leading him to apologize to those he suspected. Williams renders Clovis with a heavy brow, flaring nostrils, massive shoulders, and a comically tiny waist. Animal characters’ faces are hilariously expressive. With a warm and cozy tea shop, a handed-down-from-Granny caramel recipe, and mystery to solve, this is a sweet winter story to share.
VERDICT Fall in love with Clovis all over again as he learns—and teaches readers—about the benefit of the doubt and to make amends when they’ve done wrong.
