PreS-Gr 2–This installment in the early reader series is as drily funny as its predecessors and will have newly literate children racing through the pages. The overall theme addresses matters of lost or found. Once again, the book has four chapters about brothers Charlie and Mouse, who are mixed race. In the first story, Mouse has lost Blanket, which they determine must be “somewhere.” They investigate, until Charlie realizes that Mouse is wearing the blanket. In the second, the brothers come across a dog. “‘He looks lost to me,’ said Charlie. ‘He looks very lost to me,’ said Mouse. ‘Let’s wait and see what happens,’ said Mom.” The boys keep the dog, then return it to its owners, but then find Boop, a puppy of their own.
VERDICT The deadpan delivery of each tale treats readers as intelligent insiders on the jokes; with all the elan of Frog and Toad, but here dealing with brotherly love and support, this nifty book will give readers confidence in their skills, and a few chuckles, too.
