PreS-Gr 1–A blue-gray cat greets readers from the cover with eye markings that make it look like a bandit. On the very first page the bandit strikes and a roasted chicken has disappeared; the cat is shown tossing chicken bones away and licking its paws. Rhyming text introduces one sneaky cat after another with bold colors and illustrations that have the look of collage. The rhyming is often clunky; perhaps worse, the illustrations convey a conniving quality that is not particularly endearing for drawing readers in.
VERDICT While cats certainly can be sneaky and mischievous, this title does not connect well in its illustrative style nor in rhyming language. Not recommended.
