Cat Mask Boy

Gr 9 Up–In the fast-paced, coming-of-age story, seven-year-old Tiger has a grand ambition: to become the superhero Cat Mask Boy. But first, he has to survive his daily battles with schoolwork, neighborhood bullies, and his mom. When his report card is lost, Tiger’s quest to get it back sends him on an adventure into the dangerous streets of 1970s-era Kowloon, where he discovers that heroes and villains wear many different faces. This book has a distinctive art style and color palette that draws the eye and provides an interesting historical look at Kowloon City, which will be unfamiliar to many. Tiger is an engaging young hero, and his supporting cast of friends help him navigate his world. The book truly finds its rhythm when Dragon is introduced and his appearance marks a turning point in the narrative. While the story and dialogue are simple and easy to follow, the subject matter of this book is squarely for an older audience. Librarians should also be aware that there are some panels which depict naked young children.
