K-Gr 2–Every superhero needs two things—an origin story and a costume; this book saves time by making it both! Bea knows she likes helping people and animals, but she’s unsure of how to dress for the occasion. Finding and helping a distressed bunny not only gives her the inspiration she needs, but also the confidence to realize she doesn’t need to look the part to play the part. The story is simple, but that simplicity makes for a great early introduction into graphic novels, and its simple word choice makes for a wonderful easy reader. The type size is smaller than traditional early readers, but sentences are usually only six to seven simple words each. What this title may lack with its simplicity, it certainly makes up for with charm, such as a quick scene where Bea helps out a bee by finding its tiny reading glasses. Illustrations are equally quirky, giving off a “Hello Kitty” kawaii feeling that kids will love.
VERDICT A cute addition for larger collections.
