PreS-Gr 2–The poor elves in Santa’s workshop ate too many candy canes and are feeling unwell. Thankfully, some very energetic bunnies are coming to help Santa deliver all the presents instead. Ardagh has created a lively and rhyme-filled tale of Santa’s adventurous travels to deliver all the Christmas presents. Simple vocabulary and easy-to-see text mean this story can be understood by little readers, and the rhyme scheme has a quick and exciting pace—just like the bunnies. The repetition of certain key phrases, such as “bunnies in a sleigh,” followed by a fast rhyme, also helps draw readers in and keep up a rhythm. This is important because Mantle has created such fantastic and detailed illustrations for every action and story point that readers might be tempted to stop and try to find all the hidden details. From the North Pole to a mouse hole, the illustrations really show the chaos that Santa and the bunnies are having this Christmas.
VERDICT A rhyming read-aloud for little listeners, this wonderful Christmas tale will delight youngsters through the chaos of the bunnies and their adventures with Santa.
