K-Gr 3—Lice are an unfortunate part of many children's school experiences. In this amusing mix of fact and fiction, a young redhead discovers he is a victim of the lice scourge, but he and his mother are on the job, combating it. The story aptly conveys the hysteria usually associated with this problem, while providing a humorous story, fun facts (dogs don't get head lice), and some good advice obscured in the narrative and illustrations. The book by David Shannon (Scholastic, 2013) is hilarious and ultimately reassuring, and this production animates Shannon's amusing art, adds original music (with a bluegrass band performing at a "Lice-a-palooza"), and includes enthusiastic narration by Jesse Bernstein.
VERDICT This is a terrific production that teachers and parents will want to use to entertain and educate children.
