PreS-Gr 2—A snappy guitar introduction sets the mood as viewers click on the menu choice, causing a bottle to spill color across the screen. Thus begins the story of a meddling chicken who just wanted to help paint the barn but ends up causing mayhem and hilarity. Depicted using soft watercolors, the barnyard animals from Deborah Freedman's picture book (Viking, 2011) are imbued with childlike delight. Animated cleverly and infused with meows, quacks, and clucks, the chaotic maelstrom of Blue Chicken's "help" unfolds and resolves pleasingly. Narrator Susie Berneis's crisp diction voices the sweet little story about saying, "Sorry. Sincerely sorry." Art teachers will admire this animated short, and the DVD might inspire discussion with students about what they do when they make a mistake.
VERDICT Buy it for the art and the childlike humor.
