PreS-Gr 2—When Blanche goes to bed, she tries very hard to avoid the night. She makes loud noises to try to wake up the sun, but instead she wakes up angry parents. She sings and fools around, jumping and tumbling on her bed until she is caught again. Eventually, she wears herself out and falls happily asleep. This is a little book about a big problem: going to sleep when you really HATE the night. As much as Blanche tries to avoid the night, something bigger finally takes control: sleepiness. Many children will identify with Blanche. Sometimes night is such a rude interruption of play. The graphic illustrations are pleasing—colors are kept to a few tones of gray, blue, and black with touches of yellow light, and the lines are simple and strong. The text and pictures are complementary and full of fun and naughtiness.
VERDICT This is a good book for bedtime reading and may lead to needed discussions about nighttime behavior.
