PreS-K–Capucilli presents popular puppy Biscuit in a book meant to be shared between adults and beginning readers. Biscuit accompanies his owner and two of her friends to a farm where most of the activity involves picking apples. Biscuit enjoys himself by finding a caterpillar, chasing a squirrel, and helping find apples to pick. Color identification, including “red apples” and “yellow apples,” as well as seasonal descriptions are introduced in the text, which features much repetition. Sound effects like “Woof!” are repeated so readers can practice them. Some of the words, such as caterpillar and applesauce, will definitely require adult help to read, but there are plenty of short, easy-to-read words as well. Illustrations, done by Berlin in the style of Pat Schories, are colorful, easy to interpret, and follow the actions described on the accompanying pages of text.
VERDICT Most public libraries will want to add this title to their collection of materials for emergent readers.
