Baby-Toddler–A big black dog and a little white dog are inside their home, snug on a sofa, when they are distracted by a butterfly just outside an open window. Using just 28 words throughout the entire book, the narrative line positions opposite words in black and white alongside each dog. First, the “Little” dog hops through the window and is seen “Far” from the reader, while the “Big” dog is peeking through the window “Near” the reader. The dogs continue “Over” and “Under” the fence, “Low” and “High” in the garden, “Hidden” and “Seen” by a bear moseying through the forest, and heading “Left” and “Right” back home. In continuous full-page spreads, the illustrations are a warm, welcome blend of acrylic, pencil, watercolor, and digital collage. The text alongside each dog is accessible and clear, making this picture book a perfect choice for one-on-one sharing or a toddler storytime.
VERDICT A concept book with a dynamic storyline. Recommended for public library collections.
