PreS-K–Long is back with another fun and engaging title for new readers. The story opens with three purple, egg-shaped aliens waving and saying, “beep, bop, boop!” From there, the illustrations carry the narrative as the only text is “beep, bop, boop” for most of the pages. Various animals (both real and fictitious) are afraid of the aliens and make all attempts to run away. After a series of increasingly dramatic escape attempts, the animals crash land on the moon where they finally think they’re safe from the aliens. It’s no surprise when the aliens appear, and everyone finally learns that “beep, bop, boop” means “give me a high five.” This book starts as a fantastic entry for very new readers; the repetition of “beep, bop, boop” is simple and provides ample opportunity for practice and confidence building. The last few pages, however, suddenly introduce many more complicated words, including contractions. The digitally rendered illustrations are high-color, high-contrast, and full of movement. For most of the book, the illustrations are the story, and they successfully encourage readers to keep going with cliff-hangers and suspenseful transitions.
VERDICT Despite the rapid introduction of new words at the end, this is a fast-paced and engaging early reader that will have youngsters on the edge of their seats while feeling proud of their progress.
