Toddler-PreS–High up in the treetops, Mommy Sloth patiently tries to get her baby to sleep, but Baby Sloth is not quite ready yet. There’s a lot to do before bed, such as playing, saying goodnight to the moon and stars, singing a lullaby to the birds, and eating a snack. Baby Sloth finally settles down after a bedtime story and, being a mostly nocturnal creature, falls asleep just as the sun comes up. The story is simple but engaging and will appeal to young children. Parents and caregivers will surely relate to the struggles of getting a young child to bed. Gentle illustrations with a calm color palette reinforce the text, with the starry night sky slowly getting lighter as the story progresses. The adorable sloths are beautifully textured and featured prominently on the page. In addition to the sloths, there are other tree-dwelling animals for young readers to explore. The nocturnal sloths are a nice twist on the typical bedtime story, and will spark discussions about other nocturnal animals.
VERDICT A sweet read-aloud for storytime and bedtime. An excellent addition for most picture book collections.
