Toddler-PreS–A special construct informs every page of this board book: “If Mama sings,” the narrator eats, sleeps, or plays. In the very first scene, the child is not born yet, and so the narrator says, “I float,” and the illustrations show a very pregnant woman watering her garden. In the last spread, the narrator sings, too, and so the book comes full circle. Wittner’s watercolors have the simplicity of fine art and project the full feelings between these two.
VERDICT Spare, deeply felt, and graceful, this board book speaks to a deep bond between parent and child.
