Baby Harp Seals

Gr 3–5—Each title traces the first stages of a young animal's life, from birth to early adulthood. Facts about their physical features and behaviors are described in smooth, simple language, with useful sidebars interspersed throughout. Photographs vary in size from one to two pages, and feature engaging views of newborns, families, and growing animals interacting with their environment. A range map, selected graphs, a full body view with labeled parts, and a vertical infographic also provide visual support. Size and weight of newborns or babies are provided in inches and pounds, though usually without relative comparisons, which could have provided additional context for young readers. Threats to the creatures, such as potential predators of hedgehogs and koalas or the giant panda's endangered status, are generally skipped, which is acceptable within the scope of the series.
