Gr 3-5–Marty, Skyler, and Ralph are back in this Awesome Dog 5000 sequel and now face Mayor Bossypants, a small man with a large ego who has managed to convert himself into a “giant maniac robot.” How much longer can they hide Awesome Dog from him—especially when they need their canine friend to power their invention, a machine that makes school cafeteria food edible? As in the first volume, almost every page is illustrated with kitschy black-and-white art reminiscent of chibi manga characters and the Powerpuff Girls. The illustrations contain a decoding game, and gamers will be entertained by vivid descriptions of our heroes’ favorite video game, Sheriff Turbo-Karate, as well as the plot’s extended robot battles crammed with missiles and explosions. The book grounds itself when the friends learn how to be brave enough to own up to a mistake. Ralph and Marty are white, and Skyler has a Korean last name.
