K-Gr 2–A great fall and Halloween story, told through childrens’ eyes. Brothers Archie and Pip are getting ready for the Harvest Festival and Halloween, but despite all their cool ideas, they can’t think of a good Halloween costume. They spend a fun day playing games, picking pumpkins, and getting lost in the corn maze, but still can’t think of anything. Finally, they figure out what to dress up as and reveal their awesome costumes just in time for trick-or-treating. This story brings readers to traditional Fall festivities, like corn mazes, but also to the Halloween costume dilemma that a lot of kids face. The text is easy to read and understand, with simple words and phrases shown clearly on each page. A good amount of text might make it a better read-aloud for small groups rather than larger ones. Bright illustrations add to the fall feel and provide tiny details for readers to pick up on. For example, the spread with the corn maze is interactive: as readers can visually try to find the way out, some of the characters share their thoughts in speech bubbles that appear above their heads.
VERDICT A great book to showcase fall and Halloween, especially for explaining the different events that happen during this time.
