Gr 1–3—Basic information is presented in a more sophisticated style than in many nonfiction titles for this age group. Key vocabulary words are identified in context and defined at the bottom of the pages on which they appear in addition to being grouped in a glossary. Colorful photographs enhance the texts, while supportive captions and interesting animal facts further enhance the information being presented. General statements ("Migrating animals take breaks to rest and eat…") are followed up with specific information ("Sandhill cranes spend the winter in southern U.S. states…. More than 500,000 cranes stop along the Platte River in Nebraska…."). Overall, these are excellent titles designed to support the curriculum while at the same time appealing to general interest readers.—Cathie Bashaw Morton, Millbrook Central School District, NY
