Yes, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs make appearances, but so do Grace Hopper, one of the first computer programmers, and Gordon Gould, inventor of the laser. Though containing just a few black-and-white images, the books include detailed citations, allowing for further research.
Daredevil covers familiar territory, with chapters on Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, the Wright Brothers, and other explorers, astronauts, and pilots, without introducing new material. The first two books are the stronger purchases.—

These revised editions of books originally published as part of the Collective Biographies series provide surveys of pioneers in various fields (computers, the arts, exploration, etc.). Each volume contains ten biographical profiles, illustrated with black-and-white photographs. The writing can be flat, but the profiles will serve as adequate starting points for those doing basic research. Reading list, websites. Ind.
