K-Gr 3–A gorgeous picture book about turning mistakes into something to celebrate. Dinosaur-loving Yuri is excited about the upcoming trip to the museum. However, when a parakeet flies into the museum, it scares Yuri, and the child accidentally trips, causing a ginormous dinosaur to fall into a great big pile. When panic threatens to overcome Yuri, but with the help of breathing exercises and positive self-talk, the protagonist calms down enough to recognize that the crowd isn’t there to judge but to help solve the problem. The narrative is in second person and switches from describing Yuri’s dilemma to speaking directly to readers, placing them at the center of the story. The author-illustrator’s curvy lines make characters seem gargantuan at times and tiny at others, playing with scale and range. The expressive and exaggerated faces will draw in readers, perhaps recalling the many times catastrophes have taken over their lives. The lovely, digital illustrations are done in pastel colors, mostly pinks and blues except for Yuri, who is dressed in primary red and blue. The fellow museum-goers jump in to help the embarrassed child, demonstrating how the power of teamwork and community can overcome any issue and that a catastrophe is an opportunity for growth and has the potential to become a masterpiece. Yuri has light skin, while the other spectators are diverse in skin tone and abilities. One patron uses a wheelchair.
VERDICT Shelve this excellent book with Corinna Luyken’s The Book of Mistakes and share with those who struggle with anxiety and perfectionism.
