Gr 1-3–Unicorn can’t believe his luck when he’s hired by Agent Goat to clean his offices. He’s now one step closer to being a detective agent just like his movie hero, Agent Sparrow. When he’s mistaken for an actual agent, he eagerly takes the case to find a missing bird. Wearing Agent Goat’s detective attire and using his gadgets, Unicorn begins his search. Right away he encounters a critter who will follow him throughout his investigation that most readers will immediately recognize as the lost bird he is seeking. As Agent Goat repeatedly calls for him on the walkie talkie, Unicorn, with more bravado and confidence than actual skill, investigates. Despite his best efforts, Unicorn is stumped; meanwhile Agent Goat’s pleas are increasingly frantic. Finally, Unicorn decides to do what Agent Sparrow would do—make things right. He returns a scooter and lunch he “borrowed.” A happy ending ensues. Alvarado’s clear and clever comic book illustrations show exactly what’s really going on in Unicorn’s bumbling investigation. Readers will delight in the discrepancy between what Unicorn perceives and what’s actually happening.
VERDICT Using a graphic novel format, this slyly humorous picture book about dreaming big, accidentally solving a mystery, and doing right by those who have been wronged is sure to be a hit.
