K-Gr 4–“Imagine a world in only one color” is the opening suggestion of this beautifully inclusive book. Children are asked a series of questions intended to limit their perspective based on the five senses, such as eating one food, seeing one color, having one facial expression. Readers are then shown the beauty and value of diversity. While not stated outright, the undertone of the text is to appreciate and honor all people and cultures. The illustrations beautifully depict this message through inclusive representations of individuals. The author includes short captions with facts, such as the number of colors people can see, and presents suggestions in the back matter on how to show empathy. Well-illustrated and thoughtfully considered, this material teaches diversity and perspective, but in a deliberately vague way, which has value.
VERDICT Although the implied message is important, a more explicit explanation may also be useful for young readers; the back matter, especially, needs extra discussion to help students tie the information together.
