Gr 3–5—Robots are an evergreen topic among students—and this book is a fine addition to collections who serve youngsters. Large, bright photos and plenty of white space allow for kids to linger on each spread and gain valuable knowledge from the factoids peppered throughout. Over 20 androids are introduced, from fictional movie ones (WALL-E, R2-D2) to real-life robots that help the military, in space, in hospitals, and under the ocean. More recent inventions like Asimo NAO and RoboThespian are also covered. Ending with the future of automatons, a simple how-to activity, and a host of back matter resources (including a thorough index and a listing of videos, crafts, and game sites), this title is as enjoyable as it is informative.
VERDICT Students interested in robotics will greatly benefit as will kids just looking for something to browse. A win for nonfiction collections.
