Gr 6 Up–A spine-tingling new middle grade horror book from Winans. Luna Catalano has moved around a lot in her short life. Her parents host a supernatural home renovation show that Luna used to love but now despises. After finding out that her parents had been faking their paranormal experiences the entire time, Luna feels less connected to them and to the existence of ghosts. Arriving at their new home for the summer, Luna begins to experience strange phenomena. With the help of her newfound neighborhood friends, can she navigate actually living in a real haunted house? This horror novel for middle grade students will have readers guessing throughout. The twists and turns as the plot goes on will keep readers engaged and wanting more. The development of a main character with irritable bowel syndrome will be a mirror for young readers who also deal with this condition, as well as educational for those readers unfamiliar with IBS. Luna is also questioning her sexuality, for the first time feeling attracted to another girl; a plot line that some tweens will be able to connect with.
VERDICT A strongly written, spooky choice for any middle school library. An outstanding recommendation for readers who enjoy R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” series or are drawn to the horror/fantasy genre.
