PreS-K–Kingsley is a massive, hairy, and determined dog who has decided he wants to take a big step and get himself a human. He knows it is a huge responsibility, so he walks all around the town looking for the perfect one. He knows he doesn’t like loud or grumpy and quite a few other annoying personality traits. One human is a runner, which seems perfect—until running is just too much. Another has to many kids; one is a hot dog vendor—nope. Eventually, he spies a young girl in a red beret who is a bit loud, a bit demanding, and she likes baths. It’s still a conundrum until Kingsley realizes that she needs him. The point of view in this book makes it a standout. Kingsley is well drawn, both literally and figuratively, and the result is a hilarious tale. Readers will fall in love with this dog and his single-minded determination to find his perfect partner.
VERDICT This very funny and endearing read-aloud should be invited into every children’s room with open arms.
