GR 1-3 This sweet early reader, part of a series about tree frog siblings, will appeal to aspiring chefs and fans of beginning readers with kid-relevant issues and resolutions. Tree frogs (Puerto Rican coquís) Rafi and Rosi go to their grandmother’s house to help her cook traditional Puerto Rican dishes. They are sent to the store for missing ingredients and then go back to help. When Rafi starts to cook by himself and is praised by Abuela, Rosi becomes jealous. Abuela then cooks a special recipe with Rosi. Soon, all the neighbors also join to help make a special Puerto Rican dish. The illustrations appear to be watercolor in soft and tropical colors. The illustrations detail the food and ingredients as well as the lush greenery when the characters are outdoors. This will give kids a glimpse of life in Puerto Rico. In the English version, there are some Spanish sentences that are followed by the meaning in English. The characters are relatable and show a warm family relationship. VERDICT This is a fun read for primary school students and a must buy in either version.
