The George M. Johnson memoir is No. 1 for the first time after Maia Kobabe's Gender Queer held the top spot the last three years. Two Ellen Hopkins titles made the list.
George M. Johnson's All Boys Aren't Blue was the most challenged book of 2024, according to the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom (ALA OIF). The ALA OIF released its list of Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024 on Monday as part of ALA's State of America's Library Report. LGBTQIA+ titles remain under attack by those who seek to censor books: seven of the books in the Top 10 have LGBTQIA+ characters and storylines; four were challenged explicitly for their LGBTQIA+ content.
It is the fourth year in a row that Johnson's 2020 title made the list. It was the second-most challenged book in 2022 and 2023 behind Maia Kobabe's Gender Queer. It was No. 3 on the 2021 list.
Once again, most of the titles are the same as the year before, with two exceptions: Looking for Alaska by John Green and Crank by Ellen Hopkins returned to the list after not making it last year. Both were in the Top 10 for 2022 and, this year, replaced This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson and Let's Talk About It by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan, which fell out of the Top 10. Hopkins has two titles on this year's list.
ALA documented 821 attempts to censor materials and services at libraries, schools, and universities in 2024, with 2,452 unique titles challenged or banned.
"The most common justifications for censorship provided by complainants were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters or themes; and covering topics of race, racism, equity, and social justice," according to the press release from ALA OIF.
