An alphabet primer about children chasing their dog through a pride parade is now on the reading list for the Supreme Court. The court agreed to decide whether Maryland parents who object to Pride Puppy by Robin Stevenson, as well as a handful of other books with LGBTQIA+ characters, should be able to get their children excused from the classroom when the controversial reading materials are being used in the Montgomery County (MD) Public Schools. Lawyers for a group of parents from different religious backgrounds who are asking for an opt-out said that their only other choice is send their kids to private school or to homeschool.

Books with mature themes will soon be relegated to an adults-only room in most public libraries in Kootenai (ID) County. The private room is a requirement of an Idaho law passed last year, and the Idaho-based Community Library Network board voted to set up such a room at the Post Falls Library. The library board also voted to stop children’s Community Library Network library cards from accessing other library systems that may not be subject to the Idaho law. Under its provisions, Idaho libraries are required to take action to prevent minors from having access to “obscene materials.” Different library systems are taking different approaches to comply with the law, but the conservative Community Library Network board voiced its approval for the new requirements.

Cobb County (GA) Schools superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced that two more books are being removed from the schools’ libraries. The books being removed are Triangles by Ellen Hopkins and A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. Ragsdale said the books are being removed for “containing pictures, drawings, or descriptions that are inappropriate for a public school library for minors because of their lewd, obscene, or graphically sexual nature.”

The Darien (CT) Public Schools superintendent announced that a challenged book, Mama's Nightingale: A Story of Immigration and Separation by Edwidge Danticat, has been removed from the school curriculum. The review committee made this determination cited that the book is not developmentally appropriate for teaching.

In a vote last month, the board by a 4-2 margin approved removing a copy of the book Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart from circulation. The meeting was the first the board had held since that decision. Lily and Dunkin, a young adult novel, tells the story of a friendship between Lily, a transgender girl struggling with her identity, and Dunkin, a boy dealing with bipolar disorder.

Murfreesboro (TN) City Schools received a request to remove the book It Feels Good To Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity by Theresa Thorn from its library collection on Dec. 10, 2024. Four of the committee members recommended the removal of the book and one recommended retaining it for an older audience. The board voted to remove the book by recommendation of the committee.
