CPL logoLibraries are continually looking to provide their communities with needed and valued services, and now, Chattanooga (TN) Public Library (CPL), in partnership with Gale/Cengage Learning, is giving its patrons the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate. Career Online High School (COHS) is a unique pilot program which will allow adult learners to finish high school online while also receiving additional career training. Ideal candidates are individuals who are looking to continue their education, advance their career, or enter the workforce. CPLCOHSCPL will be awarding 25 full scholarships to adult learners who qualify after completing the online self-assessment and prerequisite course followed by in person interviews. Once awarded a scholarship, COHS will pair enrolled students with an academic coach who will help them succeed in the program. Board certified instructors will provide academic support through the entire coursework. COHS is specifically designed to reengage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into post secondary career education or the workforce. Many students are able to graduate in as few as four to six months by transferring in previously earned high school credits. This program may have special appeal to the “emerging adult” demographic, ages 19–25, who may be looking to complete high school and earn a diploma which will allow them to explore future career options. COHSGaleStudents will have 24/7 access to the online learning platform. Additional weekly computer lab hours at the CPL's downtown branch will also be available to students for additional study time, internet access, and support from fellow students. Public computers are also available at the Eastgate, Northgate, and South Chattanooga branches. In addition to a diploma, students will also receive career certification in one of the eight high growth and high demand career fields: Childcare and Education; Certified Protection Officer (Security Officer); Office Management; Certified Transportation Services (Trucker/Commercial Driver); Homeland Security; General Career Preparation; Retail Customer Service Skills; Food Service and Customer Service Skills. To be considered for the program applicants must: have a current CPL card in good standing, be at least 19 years old, and complete the online self-assessment, prerequisite course, and interview process. Enrollment begins Monday on January 26.

Wow, that's really cool! I love seeing programs like this all over, they can do a lot of good. Online high school is a great option for people who weren't able to complete high school as teenagers, for any reason. It works really well if you have an odd schedule too.
