Toddler-Gr 2–For children who ever wondered about the building of nests, this lovely rhyming book will offer a look inside some of the nests built by different kinds of animals. There are two spreads for each pairing. First, there are rhyming clues along with pictures that give readers an idea of how to identify each nest. The second set of images shows the animals in their nests, and the images help readers see how each nest is built. There are three different animals for every sort of nest: in grass, sand, and mud. The images have a warm, natural palette that is perfect for the depictions set in the natural world. Both plants and animals are true to life and will be endlessly interesting for young readers to examine. This would be an excellent introduction to a social studies unit on homes and home-building as well as a science unit on the needs of animals. It would also make a great bedtime story for some fact-loving readers.
VERDICT This is a stunning collection of animals and their nests that will make an ideal addition to any nonfiction picture book collection.
