Gr 4-6–Increasing research shows that children who spend time outdoors reap benefits that far outstrip time spent on screens, but getting them outside can be challenging. In this latest addition to the “Nature School” series, young readers are introduced to the world of gardening. Gardening encourages a connection to Earth’s rhythms, and the book encourages kids to spend time outside by providing gardening knowledge and how to use it. Each chapter outlines specific aspects of the garden, such as ecosystems and plant life cycles, and ends with hands-on activities. This is a heavily illustrated book with playful, colorful artwork that includes diagrams and maps. The text is displayed in short paragraphs in separate boxes, which can create a disconnected reading experience. Vocabulary words are bolded, but there is no glossary. The gardening activities at the end of each chapter have easy-to-follow instructions and are enticing ways to get children outside, but many require supplies like soil thermometers that readers may not have on hand. At times, the book reads more like a textbook or even one written for an audience of adults who are teaching children, which could deter more reluctant readers.
VERDICT This would be a good resource for families who homeschool or as a supplement to classroom units on the subject.
