COPY ISBN
Gr 1-2–Dr. Ick and puppy friend Sam walk readers through the basics of some of the more squirm-inducing things that the human body can do and produce. Three short chapters cover intestines, skin, veins, mucus, boogers, flatulence, pee, and poop. Illustrations, which are more humorous than strictly scientifically accurate, mix cartoon characters and personified organs with photographs. The book includes a glossary, table of contents, and instructions for a skeleton craft. While very squeamish new readers may want to stay away (as indicated by the series title, “Super Gross”), most kids will delight in the ickiness.
VERDICT Though not an apt selection for research, this science-ish reader puts the FUN in bodily FUNctions for emerging readers.
