Gr 7 Up–After serving most of her life as a spy to a nation that betrayed her trust, Chloe fakes her death and assumes a fresh identity as Victoria Sellars in a new kingdom. But old habits die hard, and she quickly becomes embroiled in state affairs. She adopts an abandoned child and becomes entangled with a knighted captain. Chloe eventually gets employed by an important but ill-tempered royal historian who finds her skills invaluable. The supporting cast is full of charming characters, each with varying motivations and unique designs. The beautiful illustrations make each page visually captivating, with much to hold readers’ interest. This story has lots to offer and expertly sprinkles in a smattering of food manga elements into what is sure to be a romance manga, while also weaving in moments of action and intrigue. At its heart, the theme of found family shines through, adding warmth and a lovely depth to the narrative.
VERDICT Highly recommended for manga collections looking to add more captivating stories with strong female leads.
