PreS-Gr 2–A little girl with an incredible imagination has a fun afternoon with her zoo friends in this wonderful picture book. When her father is out and her mother is busy, a little girl decides to share her delicious fruit with her zoo friends. Using household objects, the girl brings to life an elephant, woodpecker, hedgehog, peacock, and giraffe, playing with each of them and sharing her fruit. Scraps of paper, a vacuum cleaner, a pin cushion, and more come alive and become larger-than-life animals. The girl has special conversations with them, and they gratefully take the tasty fruit she shares. Soon they are all tired, just in time for her parents to come in. As her mother cleans up and puts things away, the girl knows her friends will visit again soon. This picture book shares the wonder of childhood and of imagination in a calm and peaceful tone, while also bringing to life large animals made from paper and other materials. Both language editions are beautifully written and show that imagination can work amazing magic. The child and her friends are happy and cheerful, with the story sharing the girl’s thoughts and the joy of play. The illustrations provide many hidden wonders that readers will enjoy browsing again and again.
VERDICT A wonderful story about the magic of imagination and childhood, this picture book is an excellent addition to English and Spanish-language collections.
