Gr 2-4–This book celebrates all things insects. The text discusses the qualities of insects in general, then dives into more detailed descriptions of specific bugs. Each highlighted insect is paired with at least one high-quality, full-color photograph. The information about the insect includes dietary preferences, defense mechanisms, habitat, and where they’re found in the world. These descriptions and images may entice young explorers to go find some beautiful examples in their own surroundings. For an early reader, the text is complex and features some longer, more challenging words. Though the typeface is large and well-spaced, there is still an intimidating amount of it on each page, which may overwhelm some emerging readers. But for most independent readers, this book will serve as a confidence boost; science that they can read entirely on their own.
VERDICT An informative book about insects, and a welcome addition to libraries looking to expand their early reader nonfiction selection.
